Who pays for senior care in Alabama?

Most families pay privately at first: Medicare covers short skilled stays, home health and hospice; Alabama Medicaid pays for nursing home care and, through the E&D and ACT waivers, care at home; VA pension helps eligible veterans; nothing public pays assisted living fees.

That last point drives planning. Families who expect a parent to need years of assisted living should map the money before the move, including when a Medicaid nursing home might become the plan.

Where can Birmingham families get free benefits help?

The area agencies on aging, reachable statewide at 1-800-AGE-LINE, offer free SHIP Medicare counseling and screening for Medicaid waivers; M4A handles E&D and ACT case management for Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, Walker and Chilton counties.
